Fantasy Football Quarterbacks: High potential

This group of quarterbacks have a wide range of outcomes when playing. If you play in a deep league, the potential for big games is high.

Sam Darnold, NYJ

Darnold was very inconsistent in his rookie season. With very little chance of being benched, the sky is the limit for the 22-year-old. In addition to Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa, the team brought in Jamison Crowder and superstar running back Le’Veon Bell to support him.

The AFC East is not known for its elite defense. If Darnold can be smarter with his passes and rely on the run game, he’ll be a solid option in 2QB leagues.

Matthew Stafford, DET

Stafford had the worst season of his career last year. Before that, he averaged 4,564 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions over seven seasons. He’s been a better fantasy quarterback than a few players higher in my rankings but ADP shows otherwise.

The pass-catching duo of Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay gives Stafford two reliable options. The Lions also brought in veteran Danny Amendola as a slot receiver. Tight end Jesse James could have a few good games and Kerryon Johnson is ready to build on his rookie season.

Stafford is worth a late pick in deep QB1 leagues.

Jimmy Garoppolo, SF

With Garoppolo missing all but three games, the combination of Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard posted 198.5 fantasy points over the 13 games that Garoppolo didn’t play, according to FantasyPros. The 49ers were also without Marquise Goodwin and Pierre Garcon for a significant amount of time.

Garoppolo is expected to be ready for Week 1. The team brought in Jordan Matthews and drafted Deebo Samuel to increase their wide receiver depth. George Kittle is a top-three tight end. Garoppolo also has the benefit of having three pass-catching running backs. He’s a sleeper this season.

Josh Allen, BUF

While his overall season numbers were not great, 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Allen had a few big games during the year.

Allen will have some good weapons on offense including John Brown, Zay Jones and Robert Foster. I expect Devin Singletary to take over running back duties before Week 8, pushing this offense to the top half.

If you play in best ball leagues, Allen is a good backup quarterback to draft.

Kirk Cousins, MIN

The Vikings have one of the best offenses in the league. With Cousins under center, Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen at wideout, Kyle Rudolph at tight end and Dalvin Cook at running back, they can run and throw effectively.

Cousins posted his first 30-touchdown season in his first year with Minnesota. Despite wanting to run the ball more, Cook will not have 30 carries per game. Cousins will continue to throw 35-40 times per game. He’s a borderline starter in most leagues.
