MLB DFS Pitching Gems August 7: Cole for everyone
Steven Matz – Matz is the next pitcher to get a match-up with the horrible excuse for an offense that is Miami. He has a 4.57 xFIP, 21.4% K rate, 47.9 % GB rate, and 39% HC. Miami hits more GB than any other team in the league, at over 50%.
Combined with a miserable .149 ISO, and 24% K rate. Matz is very identical on both sides of the plate, although he does strikeout more righties, and he will see quite a bit in this Miami lineup.
Pitch Mix – Matz is still one of the pitchers who uses the sinker like a traditional 4Seam fastball, throwing it over 50% of the time. He then throws the curve, slider, and change all around 13% of the time.
The whiffs are slightly down on his change this year, but he did get 30% whiffs last month on it. For throwing that sinker so much you would like to see a higher GB rate on it, as the pitch is getting only 35%, but the curve and slider get well over 60%.
The change moves almost ten inches, and the sinker moves right around nine horizontally, and five vertically. The bottom line is Miami is an awful team, that will get a few singles, but a lot of grounders. Matz is a grinding GB pitcher so this type of play is really suited for him.
