Manchester City vs. Liverpool

It’s the defending league champions against the team that came very close to being champion meeting on November 9 at Anfield. The sides meet for a second time in league play on April 4 at the Etihad in Manchester.

The sides already met during the season’s curtain-raiser in the annual FA Community Shield this past Sunday. The game ended 1-1 and won by Manchester City 5-4 following a penalty-kick shootout.

There isn’t much we can read into the Community Shield encounter, which is just a notch above being a friendly despite a trophy being on the line. Both teams are just coming off preseason and still finding their footing.

Despite that, passion is always ignited when these teams meet. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was shown a yellow card for stepping on the field after spending much of the contest shouting and wildly gesturing to his players from the sidelines.

“An incredible final from both sides,” Guardiola said after the match. “No team can dominate for 90 minutes. We had real good moments. In the last 15 minutes we were exhausted and they had chances to win the game. It was a good test for both teams. It’s nice for the players to realize what they will face this season.”
