30. WWE SummerSlam 1995

  • Hakushi def. The 1-2-3 Kid
  • Hunter Hearst Helmsley def. Bob Holly
  • The Smoking Gunns def. The Blu Brothers
  • Barry Horowitz def. Skip
  • Bertha Faye def. Alundra Blayze for the WWE Women’s Championship
  • The Undertaker def. Kama (Casket Match)
  • Bret Hart def. Isaac Yankem, DDS by DQ
  • Shawn Michaels def. Razor Ramon in a Ladder Match to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship
  • Diesel def. King Mabel to retain the WWE Championship

Diesel vs. King Mabel may not be the worst match in SummerSlam history — as you read on the last page, that has to go to The Undertaker and Giant Gonzalez — but it’s certainly right up there as one of the worst main events of all time, and that applies to every single pay-per-view WWE has ever produced.

Mabel had ditched the tag team scene for a singles run and was booked very strongly leading up to this match, even winning the King of the Ring tournament earlier that summer. But this was just another big guy that Vince threw in there for a big man vs. big man angle and it was a bad match with a horrible finish that didn’t even go 10 minutes.

The night actually didn’t start out that badly. The 1-2-3 Kid (a/k/a Sean Waltman, a/k/a Syxx, a/k/a X-Pac) and Hakushi, who many of you may not remember or ever even heard of, put forth a solid effort. There was no real story to the matchup but just two talented individuals putting on a fast-paced show for the Pittsburgh crowd.

A young Triple H took on Bob Holly in a battle of terrible gimmicks and The Game’s future D-X stablemate, Billy Gunn, continued the awful night as he and Bart beat The Blu Brothers in an insanely boring tag match. You know how I know people were bored? They went crazy when Barry Horowitz, one of the biggest jobbers in WWE history, picked up a win. Okay, that was actually pretty funny.

Alundra Blayze lost her women’s title to Bertha Faye in another dud, which was followed by another Undertaker match we’d all like to forget. But hey, his future brother, who was then a crazy dentist, got to beat the hell out of Bret Hart before getting disqualified.

The only great thing to come out of SummerSlam ’95 was the Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon, who put on an absolute classic, a match that is better than the same match they had the previous year at WrestleMania X. The ‘Mania match is always going to get more praise but they told a better story here and it is just a joy to watch these two work together.

And yes, Shawn had a little trouble getting the belt down but that doesn’t take away from what the two did in the ring. This bout may have saved this show from being the worst SummerSlam of all time. What’s crazy is that it was added to the show to replace Shawn vs. Sid because the rest of the card was so weak. Good call.
