FanDuel MLB DFS Breakdown: Early Slate Pitching

Mike Soroka (9k) @ Miami

This is an easy decision, just pay up for Soroka in cash games. He’s not even that expensive all things considered. I paid the same price for Teheran yesterday and he was worth it, going 7 innings and striking out 7 Marlins although he finally gave up a run.

Soroka has two solid starts against the Fish this year, too, and is a better pitcher than Teheran from a talent perspective. He has one of the best sinkers in baseball and Miami has a high groundball rate and a high strikeout rate (25%) against RHP.  Righties against the Marlins is a tried and true method and Soroka is the clear cut choice for cash games on this early slate.

Jeff Samardzija (8.3k) vs. Philadelphia

The Shark is my higher priced GPP option here on the early slate. While I haven’t used him that often this year, I do think this is an interesting spot against the Phillies at home.

Since the All-Star Break, Samardzija has been solid for the Giants with 2.60 ERA, allowing only a .200 average against and a .275 wOBA. He’s also racked up 30 strikeouts in his last 27 innings and threw six innings of shutout ball against Philly just two starts ago.

He is much better against righties, so the two big bats he will have to navigate around are Harper (who homered twice last night) and Dickerson. Being at home really helps as he’s only surrendered 7 home runs there all season as opposed to 12 on the road.

Spencer Turnbull (6.2k) vs. Kansas City

Turnbull is the cheap option I am considered for tournaments. He was limited to only three innings in his last start but was on a strict pitch count of 75 pitches after returning from the IL. He’s had a solid rookie campaign this year and has dominated the Royals in three out of his four starts this season.

He’s had a 26% K rate to righties this year while also maintaining a 53% ground ball rate as well. Those are two things I am usually looking for in my pitchers. The Royals offense has little in the way of lefties to give him trouble and Turnbull has the talent to excel in this matchup. He’ll likely have his pitch count lifted, too, but pay attention for any news about that.
