3. The newness of Matt LaFleur

All eyes will be on LaFleur early in the season. Specifically, the relationship he is or isn’t able to form with Rodgers is going to be a key for the Packers. The best news for fans in Green Bay is that LaFleur will bring a new energy to the franchise.

In some ways, his best asset will be the fact that he isn’t Mike McCarthy. The former coach’s words had gotten very stale by the time he was eventually relieved of his duties. Rodgers, and his teammates will get some sort of lift just by hearing someone else barking out orders on the practice field.

That newness will only serve LaFleur for so long though. At some point, the Packers will need to benefit from his expertise. His impact on the team should be most apparent on the offensive side of the football. Green Bay’s offense was painfully predictable under McCarthy. LaFleur should bring the playbook into the forefront of the modern NFL.

That doesn’t mean everything will change overnight. Rodgers is still going to get plenty of chances to sling the football all over the field. The newness of LaFleur will be revealed in how he can keep opposing defenses off-balance. If he succeeds in that endeavor it will lead to a very productive first season in charge.
