MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Top GPP Pivot

Joey Luchessi (7.6k FD, 10k DK) vs. Tampa Bay

Wow, did FanDuel mess up his price tonight and holy crap did DK nearly price him completely out of profitability. In a perfect world, he would be 8.5-9k on both sites, but instead, we are looking at a situation where he could be massive chalk on FanDuel and much lower owned on Draftkings since you only need 700 more bucks to get up to much safer Greinke.

Luchessi is coming off a solid outing against the Mariners, striking out 8 of five and 1/3 innings. He’s got good strikeout stuff, with a 24% K rate on the year, but still has some control issues and hard contact issues against righties. Tonight he’ll face a Tampa team that I’ve been picking on with lefties for the last month or more with a good bit of success.

The Rays have some high K-rates against LHP and high ground-ball rates against Luchessi’s primary pitch, his sinking two-seam fastball. Newly acquired Jesus Aguilar is the one guy who I worry about based on his profile, but overall this is one of the better spots on the slate.

In fact, Tampa has the second-lowest implied team total after the White Sox, so Vegas is believing in Joey in this spot, too. I don’t usually endorse playing chalky pitchers in tournaments, but the lack of decent options on this size of a slate is going to force my hand. I’d rather play a good, chalky pitcher than a bad, low-owned pitcher any day.
