PGA FanDuel Picks: The 2019 BMW Championship
PGA FanDuel Picks – Low Tier Picks: ($9,000 – $10,000)
Hideki Matsuyama – $9,900 – (Cash)
Matsuyama wasn’t exactly good for the second straight week as he followed his missed cut at the Wyndham Championship with a T-30 at the Northern Trust last week. However, this is another case of this being a price too good for me to pass up.
The Hideki-Bot was on fire heading into the Open, but since his missed cut there he has no doubt been struggling to put it all together. Although the form is trending the wrong direction, the fact that there is no cut, and we are guaranteed four rounds regardless makes this a no-brainer play for me.
Matsuyama is a fantastic iron player and ball-striker, and his overall game fits the type of player I am targeting here at Medinah Country Club. I think he will be a chalky cash-game play, and it is well worth eating. I would argue he is worth a GPP fade as an ownership pivot, as any time he is under $10K, he will be popular, especially if you are making just one tournament lineup.
Francesco Molinari – $9,400 – (GPP)
I had to do a double-take when I saw this price. With my Italian roots, Molinari has always been one of my favorite players, and although he has been mostly bad since his T-5 at the Masters, he is finally well below $10K, and I am fully on board for a number of reasons.
Let’s state the obvious, Molinari is the 7th ranked golfer in the world coming into this event, and he is the 25th highest priced player in the FanDuel player pool. I won’t go as far as to play him in cash due to his volatility as of late, but I will take a shot on him not completely destroying some GPP lineups this week.
Molinari is one of those guys who tends to find a different gear in bigger events, and if he wants to make the TOUR Championship next week, he will need to turn it around quick. The 35-year-old is has only played 14 FedEx Cup events this season, and he is currently in 34th place in the standings. He will need to move up four spots to advance to next week.
Finally, I may see another pattern taking shape here which looks to have some promise. Looking at his last five events, Molinari has followed up a bad week at a smallish event with a much better effort at a bigger event the following week.
Now, this isn’t a major championship, but you do have to go back to May to find two consecutive weeks or events where Molinari was off of his game. I won’t have a ton of Molinari, but he is really the only golfer standing out for me at this price point.
