The pure-white English bulldog known as Uga has been a part of Georgia’s football program since 1956. His name is also the abbreviation of the university.

He’s not as feared as LSU’s tiger or as lively as WVU’s mountaineer, but Uga is a beloved figure in Georgia regardless. Every dog has been owned by the same family, too – Frank W. Seiler – and Uga is awarded a varsity letter plaque like every other athlete; he’s one of the Bulldogs.

Early-season games in Georgia and throughout the country can get a bit warm for a dog, so Uga’s on-field home is an air-conditioned doghouse that sits next to the cheerleaders. He doesn’t do much in the manner of leading cheers like other mascots, though. Uga’s simply the face of the operation.

Uga’s that have passed are all buried within the confines of Sanford Stadium, the only major college to do so with deceased mascots. Each Uga, from I through VII, are buried in marble vaults near the main gate.
