MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Top GPP Pivot
Cole Hamels (8.3k FD, 9.3k DK) @ Philadelphia
Hamels was enjoying a really solid 2019 campaign before suffering an injury that shelved him for all of July. Since returning, he’s made two starts, one of which was very good and the other one wasn’t so good. I’m willing to cut the veteran lefty some slack and take a shot on him tonight in GPPs as the price and matchup are both pretty favorable.
Hamels will return to Philly. his old stomping grounds, for the first time in a road uniform. The first outing against Philly at Wrigley didn’t go all that well as he gave up three runs on nine hits and lasted only four innings. I think he turns in a better performance tonight against a Phillies team that can struggle against left-handed pitching.
Last night’s Cubs starter, Jose Quintana, struck out 14 Phillies in only six innings. Now, I’m not predicting that many K’s for Hamels, but it just goes to show that the Phillies are vulnerable against lefties with good offspeed pitches. And Hamels changeup is one of the better changeups in baseball. Without any other elite options to spend up on, I think Hamels is the guy you want to consider in this tier of pitchers right below Kershaw for your GPP exposure.
