MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Mid-Tier Option

Marco Gonzales (7.7k FD, 8.7k DK)

Gonzales is my favorite point-per-dollar option for GPPs tonight as he’s even cheaper than Hamels and has a more favorable matchup. Marco is coming off a solid outing against the Rays in which he struck out 9 hitters before leaving the game in the seventh inning after taking a ball off the leg.

Gonzales is a soft-tossing lefty who is very adept and working the corners and locating his pitches, especially his changeup which is his best swing-and-miss pitch to righties. He’s been pretty solid against right-handed hitters this season and so a lineup full of Detroit righties is actually a better matchup than it might appear to be at first glance.

These Tigers can make even the most mediocre pitchers look good. They whiffed 10 times against Mike Montgomery last week and 8 times against Gonzales back in July. Marco gives up plenty of contact and will allow some hits, but he is a master of getting out of jams, inducing soft contact, and getting groundball outs.

There’s always a chance the Tigers just single and double him to death, but Gonzales is well worth the risk at this price as he is capable of a big outing, too, as evidenced by his 52 FanDuel point game against Detroit just three starts ago.
