Ranking the 10 most iconic college football traditions

No. 6: WVU, Country Roads
What is the largest amount of people you’ve ever seen carry on a single tune to near-perfection? Following every Mountaineer sporting event, players and fans alike all join together and belt out the lyrics to John Denver’s, “Country Roads.” Plenty of school’s sing a post-game song or bow in prayer, but few things compare to those few minutes when every Mountaineer is one.
Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium seats about 60,000 guests. I’m not much of a gambler, but I’d wager plenty of the visiting team’s fans enjoy the rendition if they’re not singing along themselves.
John Denver performed his hit song in 1980 in front of a sold-out crowd at Milan Puskar Stadium. It has since been played every pre- and post-game since, with the fans anxiously awaiting the end of the game to corral their friends and belt out, “To the place, I belong…WEST VIRGINIA!”
On a lesser note, Neil Diamond’s, “Sweet Caroline,” is also a fan-favorite among West Virginia fans. When ESPN’s College Gameday visited Morgantown in 2014, Kirk Herbstreit & Crew couldn’t stop laughing when the restless WVU fans sang their version. Enjoy.
