3. Norwich get first points with win over Newcastle

Norwich host Newcastle in their first home game since returning to the Premier League. The Canaries had an incredibly difficult start to their league campaign as they were torn apart 4-1 by a rampant Liverpool side last weekend.

The Reds showed the difference in quality as they raced into a 4-0 first-half lead. However, Norwich came out fighting in the second half and stuck to their attacking style of play. Their persistence  was rewarded as they actually won the second half 1-0 against the European Champions.

Daniel Farke has Norwich playing some attractive soccer and while this is great to see, the German manager needs to be careful how far his team take it. At points last week they gave the ball away so cheaply and were perhaps lucky only to be four goals down.

The step up from Championship to Premier League soccer is huge and if Norwich are too blasé with their soccer then they will be punished by the majority of teams in this league. That doesn’t mean that the Canaries won’t be competitive but it means that they need to be more calculated with their play.

In the Championship they could outgun teams but quite often this season they will be on the back foot and not able to consistently play out from the back. This is something that they will learn with time but for now we can enjoy their pursuit of quality soccer.

Newcastle were a little unlucky to lose to Arsenal and Steve Bruce will be desperate to get his first win as Magpies boss in order to get the boo boys off his back. One win may not solve this immediately but it will certainly bring some form of hope to the skeptical supporters who were devastated to lose Rafa Benitez this summer.

It won’t get any easier for Bruce this weekend as Norwich inflict a second defeat on his Newcastle side. Teemu Puuki will bag a double with Joelinton getting one back for the Magpies. This won’t be enough for Newcastle though and Norwich will run out 2-1 winners.
