Playing away at Spurs is one the toughest starts to an EPL season imaginable, but Aston Villa put in a creditable performance on Sunday that saw them leading Mauricio Pochettino’s team until well past the 70-minute mark.
That was Villa manager Dean Smith’s first experience of the Premier League either as a player or coach, in a career that stretches all the way back to 1989. It’s been quite a rise for the 48-year-old, who only took over at Villa Park in October.
Smith certainly can’t complain that he hasn’t been backed in the transfer market, with the club making a net spend of more than £130 million over the summer to bring in 12 players.
Bournemouth had an intriguing transfer window themselves, with wide forward Arnaut Danjuma – part of the influx of players into the Premier League from Belgium this summer – Huddersfield midfielder Philip Billing and Bristol City left-back Lloyd Kelly all arriving for significant sums, although Danjuma and Kelly were unavailable for the season opener due to injury.
