MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Mid-Tier Option

German Marquez (7.6k FD, 8.8k DK) vs. Miami

We finally get to my feature pitcher on the evening. German Marquez takes on the Miami Marlins at home and has the ultimate matchup of any pitcher on the slate. I’m a little nervous that he could end up chalky as his teammate Jon Gray (who myself and fellow FanSided Fantasy analyst Brandon Lauderback were all over yesterday) tossed eight shutout innings with seven strikeouts last night against these fish. Normally pitchers in Coors field games see reduced ownership, but Marquez price, matchup, and recency bias may end up making him popular.

Regardless of his ownership, this is a great spot for Marquez. He’s incredibly stingy to right-handed hitters, allowing only a .276 wOBA to righties this season. Meanwhile, the Marlins have a 25% strikeout rate and some of the worst offensive numbers in the league. They lack power in their lineup and have high groundball rates which match up well with Marquez pitch mix as he throws a hard mid-’90’s sinker.

After a “rocky” stretch (sorry, I couldn’t help myself with that bad pun) in June, Marquez has regained some great form in July and August. His last home start was a masterful 10-strikeout performance against the elite Dodger offense over six frames and he’s coming off an impressive 9-strikeout outing against the Padres last week in which he went eight innings.

His price is really attractive, especially on FanDuel, for GPPs as he gives you the same type of upside as DeGrom for 4k less and allows you the chance to stack up some higher-priced bats (possibly some of his Rockies teammates, more on that later).
