MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Draftkings SP2

Logan Webb (5.8k DK) @ Arizona

Webb is making his major league debut for the Giants tonight after making only one start at AAA and starting the season in the rookie league. Webb has dominated at every level of the minors this year and hasn’t stayed long at any one level as he continues to move up through the system quickly. He’s a former fourth-round pick who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and is one of the better pitching prospects in San Francisco’s minor league system.

His lone start at AAA this year was excellent, as he struck out seven and walked none over seven innings while allowing only one run. He’s posted some nice strikeout numbers this year in addition to excellent groundball rates. His fastball was sitting in the mid-’90s in his last start and he has a plus breaking ball.

His stats and scouting report all suggest he is a pretty good pitcher. There’s always some risk in taking a rookie making his debut against major league hitters, but oftentimes the pitcher has the advantage in this scenario as these hitters have never seen him and aren’t used to his delivery or pitch mix.

The D-Backs bats are streaky, and it could be the “Coors effect” to blame as they have been limited to only a few runs by the Giants starters in the first two games of this series (they scored most of their runs last night against the Giants bullpen) at home after spending the previous series in the high altitude of Denver. If Webb does indeed have a sharp breaking ball, we could see the D-Backs hitters continue to struggle to pick it up. If Dereck Rodriguez and Jeff Samardzija can slow this team down, then this rookie with some momentum coming into this game certainly has a lot of upside. And he’s just way too cheap!
