MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Gas Cans of the Night

Hector Santiago @ Los Angelas Angels

It’s pure coincidence that both gas cans tonight are named Hector, I swear! Both have a lot in common here today in terms of their weaknesses and are facing good offenses in great hitting ballparks.

Let’s start with Santiago, who at age 31 is trying to resurrect his career and is getting a chance to start for the White Sox once again as they have decided they would rather use him to eat innings then call up any more youngsters from the minors. Santiago best years were with the Angels back in 2014-2015 but he’s fallen on hard times lately as he spent most of this season in AAA with the Mets and White Sox.

He has always been a fly-ball pitcher with a tendency to give up homers. He walks too many batters and has seen his strikeout rates decline over the years. At AAA this season for Chicago he is allowing over 2 homers per nine innings and in his only start this year he allowed 5 runs on 7 hits and two walks, failing to get out of the fifth inning. His xFIP is up over 6 and I expect the Angels’ righties to pound him (Mike Trout lock button!)

Hector Noesi @ Colorado

Noesi is a 32-year journeyman who is getting his chance to try and stick in the Miami rotation for the rest of the season as he returns to the majors this year after spending four years overseas pitching in Korea. Noesi has registered some solid strikeout numbers both at AAA and in his two starts for Miami but has also been giving up the long ball.

He’s allowed 27 homers at AAA this season and that trend didn’t stop when he got to Miami and he’s given up 4 already in his first 11 innings at the major league level. He has an extreme fly ball tendency that won’t play well in Coors tonight, making the Rockies hitters elite cash and GPP plays. Colorado is already implied for over 7 runs tonight so they won’t be sneaky, but they’re probably chalk you are going to want to eat as I see some dingers being hit by their big boppers off Noesi.
