Heisman Trophy: Top candidate from every Power 5 team in 2019
SEC West
Alabama Crimson Tide: Tua Tagovailoa, QB
This wasn’t much of a question, despite the unbelievable talent that Alabama has throughout the roster. Tua Tagovailoa almost won the award last season and will have a great chance to do so this year. With his elite talent as a passer and an even more elite group of wide receivers at his disposal, we should see another big-time season from the Hawaiian quarterback.
Arkansas Razorbacks: Rakeem Boyd, RB
While Rakeem Boyd is questionable to start the season 100 percent healthy after offseason surgery, he’s still Arkansas’ best bet for a Heisman candidate. The running back averaged 6.0 yards per carry last season and, if he can get healthy and play a bigger role for the Razorbacks offense in 2019, the talent is there for him to quickly rise to stardom.
Auburn Tigers: Bo Nix, QB
Bo Nix won the Auburn starting quarterback job over Joey Gatewood after a long battle that extended into late-August. A five-star recruit, Nix has tremendous potential. And with Gus Malzahn potentially coaching for his life, he has every reason to get this offense humming. The stars are aligning for the young signal-caller to have a big year at the helm of the Tigers offense — if he can realize the hype right away.
LSU Tigers: Grant Delpit, S
With all due respect to Joe Burrow, the best candidate to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy on LSU plays defense. Grant Delpit is a generational talent at safety that just makes plays. Whether he’s coming up and making tackles, making plays to defend in the passing game or doing something else, Delpit does it all. It’s near impossible for defensive players to win but if anyone has a shot, it’s Delpit.
Mississippi State Bulldogs: Tommy Stevens, QB
The decision to transfer to Mississippi State from Tommy Stevens is one that very much hurts Penn State but puts the Bulldogs in a fine position. Stevens has the raw talent to make plays all over the field and, if Joe Moorhead can get him acclimated quickly in Starkville, he could be a player that bursts onto the scene.
Ole Miss Rebels: Jerrion Ealy, RB
Put simply, the Ole Miss offense is hard to define entering 2019 given that they lost their top-four pass-catchers and starting quarterback. As five-star freshman running back Jerrion Ealy enters the fold, though, he’s hard to deny as a potential game-changer. With game-breaking quickness and speed, the possibility that he takes college football by storm isn’t negligible.
Texas A&M Aggies: Kellen Mond, QB
Kellen Mond was one of the breakout stars in college football last season. And now that Trayveon Williams has departed from Texas A&M, Mond will be in the spotlight even more. He topped 3,100 yards passing last year with 31 total touchdowns (24 passing, seven rushing). If he can better that and can keep the Aggies highly ranked despite a fearsome schedule, Mond should get some consideration.
