ARLINGTON, TX – NOVEMBER 24: Baylor Bears wide receiver Denzel Mims (#15) hauls in a catch between Texas Tech Red Raiders cornerback Demarcus Field (#23) and safety John Bonney (#10) during the Big 12 conference college football game between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor Bears on November 24, 2018 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Big 12 – Part 1

Baylor Bears: Denzel Mims, WR

Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer was considered here as he’s going to put up good numbers but wide receiver Denzel Mims’ number are likely to be more impressive. After tearing it up for the Bears last season, he’s expected to do more of the same in the 2019 season and his constant presence on highlight reels should earn him some national love.

Iowa State Cyclones: Brock Purdy, QB

Brock Purdy burst onto the scene last season as a freshman and started gaining some buzz. Despite losing both David Montgomery and Hakeem Butler, the Iowa State offense isn’t expected to dip in productivity and Purdy is the catalyst for that. If he can make the Cyclones a big sleeper in the conference, the quarterback should be in consideration for the award.

Kansas Jayhawks: Pooka Williams, RB

Though Pooka Williams is suspended for Kansas’ first game of the 2019 season, the running back is the best player on the Jayhawks offense. Under Les Miles’ old-school approach, he’s undoubtedly going to be featured heavily in the offense and has the talent to put up good numbers as a result.

Kansas State Wildcats: Skylar Thompson, QB

Something that we’ve seen and will continue to see as we peruse these candidates, Skylar Thompson is the starting quarterback for a Power 5 team, which makes him at least somewhat feasibly a candidate for the award. Beyond that, though, the talent of the player and the team around him limit his overall chances.

Oklahoma Sooners: Jalen Hurts, QB

With all due respect to CeeDee Lamb, Trey Sermon and Kennedy Brooks, the last two starting quarterbacks for the Oklahoma Sooners have won the Heisman Trophy. Thus, Jalen Hurts taking over at that position makes him the best candidate in 2019 out of Norman. While he may not be the passer that Mayfield and Murray are, his dual-threat ability will cause Big 12 defenses fits.
