5 candidates to be Indianapolis Colts starting QB in 2020
1. Jacoby Brissett
As previously mentioned, Brissett did well under adverse circumstances in 2017. So well, in fact, that the Colts remained steadfast they valued him highly as Luck’s backup and would not trade him despite getting at least one pretty good offer. Now, that stance looks like well-founded.
Brissett’s numbers from his only extended NFL playing time don’t leap off the page (193.6 passing yards per game, 13 touchdown passes, 58.8 percent completion rate, 81.7 passer rating, 41.7 QBR). But two 300-yard passing games in a five-game stretch, with general upticks in completion percentage and yards per attempt metrics over that same span, point to his upside with a far better offensive line (he took a league-high 52 sacks in 2017) and more skill position talent around him.
Brissett is entering the final year of his contract, so a good season in 2019 will line him up to get starter-level or even top-end quarterback money on the open market. If he plays as well as it’s thought he could and leads the Colts deep into the playoffs, along the same line as what their goals were if Luck were the quarterback, the free agent suitors will be lining up.
Indianapolis has ample cap space to make Brissett a nice contract offer, whenever it might come between now and next March if he performs well. With the idea he’d have to sit behind Luck now gone, the Colts can offer a clear starting opportunity as well as the kind of contract another team can’t match.
Other Potential Options For The Colts in 2020: Eli Manning, Marcus Mariota, Ryan Fitzpatrick
