Fear the Walking Dead’s latest episode “You’re Still Here” appeared partially inspired by Resident Evil 2’s Raccoon City Police Department in what was otherwise a slow affair.

This recap contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 11.

Tonight’s Fear the Walking Dead featured walkers overrunning a police department in a scene right out of Resident Evil 2. Right down to Leon Kennedy style shotguns and riot gear with Strand playing the role of Leon. Newcomer Wes, similarly helped out with some shots of his own. Unfortunately, the fun action was not to last, as the show regressed into a redux of a Walking Dead Season 6 plot line. Suddenly, Alicia must have been given Morgan Jones’ script from 2016, except she won’t even hurt walkers.

FTWD practically broke the fourth wall this week, when Wes mocked story time with Alicia. ‘I know, you’ve lost a brother too. Now, you’re going to tell me a story to show me how alike we are!’ Despite the series literally commenting on its own script tendencies, later on, Wes decided he was moved after all. Meanwhile, the lead villain Logan, stopped Morgan and Al on the road demanding to know where the oil fields are. Let’s just say, it wasn’t exactly a Negan moment. Both good and evil seem lost this season.

The whole going around saving random people schtick feels like something one would see on Captain Planet. Oil fields as a central narrative just doesn’t have much punch to it on FTWD. This isn’t 24 or House of Cards. Even Fear’s one mystery of who was painting messages on the trees didn’t seem rewarding enough. Any FTWD fan was just waiting for it to be an excuse to write Madison back into the script already. Wes doing it was a solid twist but it also confirmed that Madison might not be coming back this season… Or ever.

Fear the Walking Dead would have actually benefited narratively, if Morgan took out Logan in rage as he once did to Richard. Logan commenting on Morgan being unable to save his wife and son was the perfect setup. On top of that, Wes turns out to be after someone for stealing his book manuscript. Not to copy it, mind you, but to read it. Wes ends up killing the guy after they engage in a quick scuffle. Then proceeds to leave him the manuscript anyway after he passes. ‘He died for it, he can keep it.’

After Alicia discovers Wes had been painting the trees, she decides to paint her own. She is then able to take out walkers once again. Morgan pacification phase, over!
