Value Defenders

John Egan (Sheffield United @ Chelsea, $12) – Continuing with the “center defender on an underdog” theme, we have another one here.  Egan is the most consistent of the Sheffield United defenders when it comes to fantasy performances with double digits in all 3 games.  This is going to be the first time that Sheffield United are large underdogs.  Their defenders are going to be busy the whole game and having this be an away game makes me like Egan even more.

I’m not really into either George Baldock ($10) or Chris Basham ($10), but I suppose you could go there if you want the Sheffield defense and can’t find $2 for Egan.  Jack O’Connell ($14) is also on my radar for Saturday, but he’s not much of a value play.

Caglar Soyuncu (Bournemouth @ Leicester, $10) – I strongly debated including Soyuncu in my article last slate, and I should’ve since he finished with 28.2 fantasy points.  It’s a little puzzling to me why he’s still this cheap, but I’m not complaining.  I can get a guy for only $10 who has been in double digits all 3 games and has shown potential upside.  I have a feeling that this game is played in a very open style soon after the whistle.  Soyuncu is a top value option at defender and can be used in any format.

On the other side of this game, I like Diego Rico ($10) if he starts.  He had a nice 17.3 fantasy point game in week 1, but unfortunately, he hasn’t started since.  There’s a chance he starts this week, and if he does, he should be in consideration as a value defender.

I want to also mention Kurt Zouma ($10) and Antonio Rudiger ($8) as value options.  Rudiger could make his season debut on Saturday after having season-ending knee surgery last April.  He and Zouma have a good chance at a clean sheet bonus at home against Sheffield United.  That extra 5 points goes a long way for players already priced this cheap.  They’ll only need a few peripherals to hit double digits.
