Hot seat watch, Week 1: Clay Helton and 5 coaches feeling the heat
4. Justin Fuente – Virginia Tech
Justin Fuente’s seat isn’t completely hot yet in Blacksburg, but the Hokies have to show a lot more than they did in 2018. When Fuente took over the program, there was plenty of optimism considering the early success.
However, 2018 was a stark contrast to 2017. After finishing 9-4, Virginia Tech responded with a 6-7 record last season. Clemson doesn’t play in the Coastal Division, so there’s no excuse for the Hokies to not be right there in the division hunt every season as they look to meet Clemson in the conference title game in Charlotte.
Fuente will quickly be off any hot seat boards so long as the Hokies get off to a good start and quickly erase any memories of last season.
Virginia Tech will open the season with a conference win and that would be a good place to start with a win. The Hokies will head to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College.
A win would give Fuente a leg up to start the season as he chases the ACC Coastal crown. A loss would be almost double in the wrong direction. It would go against the conference record and it would be underwhelming.
