NFL Fantasy Football: Ranking the Rookie RB’s
6. Devin Singletary – Buffalo Bills
As we sneak into the top six rookie running backs for 2019, I feel like all six of these guys have a legitimate shot at serious playing time this season. I love this kid first of all. “Motor” Singletary is a slippery 5’7″ back who put up some serious numbers in his college career at Florida Atlantic. His sophomore season put him on the map, as he rushed for almost 2,000 yards and scored 33 total touchdowns in 14 games. No stranger to the end zone obviously, hopefully, the Bills were able to find a gem here in the third round.
Editors Note: With the Saturday morning news that LeSean McCoy has been released, the expectation is that Singletary will have the starting role all to himself which makes him a clear RB2 for fantasy leagues and an elite dynasty league target. Start the hype train!
Singletary spent the whole preseason buried on the depth chart, and there is little doubt LeSean McCoy will get the nod until he struggles. Given he has been ineffective for most of the last three years or so, I do not think it will be long before Singletary gets some run. He is still on a mostly bad team, but he does have a solid young QB in Josh Allen to grow with, and this could be a formidable QB/RB duo in the near future. I think Singletary ends up starting for the Bills at some point this season, but I am not sure how deep into the season it will be.
5. Darwin Thompson – Kansas City Chiefs
Another small back at just 5’8″ Thompson is another small-school stud. After rushing for 2,420 yards at the JUCO level, Thompson finished up college at Utah State, playing one year and starting nine out of 13 games last season. He rushed for 1,044 yards on just 153 carries and scored 14 TD’s. With his preseason performance, it looks as though the Chiefs may have found a steal in the 6th round here.
Damien Williams looks to have the starters’ job locked up for now, and he was impressive in the Chiefs third preseason game. However, Thompson has gotten first-team reps in practice all preseason long, and I think this situation molds into a committee in due time. I think Williams will be good in this offense just as finished out last season, but Thompson will get some run as well, and I think he makes a name for himself when he does.
4. Tony Pollard – Dallas Cowboys
Talk about a situation to take advantage of. While the masses were ignoring the Zeke holdout and drafting him in the first round like it was nothing to worry about, 4th round pick Tony Pollard out of Memphis was having himself a solid preseason. Elliott got an offer to become the 2nd highest-paid back but has apparently turned it down, wanting to become the highest paid in the league.
I am legit worried Zeke sits out all season. If he does, Pollard could easily end up the #1 rookie back in the league based on volume alone. Pollard is versatile at 6’0″ and did play some WR in college, and will be used heavily in this offense until we see Zeke.
