6. Los Angeles Angels

The Angels have had more name and uniform changes than most MLB franchises since joining the league in 1961 as the Los Angeles Angels. Along the way, they’ve been branded the California Angels, Anaheim Angels, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and finally back to simply the Los Angeles Angels. With the exception of their ill-fated Anaheim scheme from 1997 to 2001 (thanks for nothing, Disney), the Halos have always rocked some of the best uniforms in the league.

As their uniforms and official name have changed frequently over the years, the franchise has actually done a very good job settling on a uniform design that combines many of the best attributes of all of their various jerseys and color schemes. The block ‘A’ with the halo hanging on the point is one of the best concepts in the league. The text has just enough extra flair with the corners and curves, and the sleeve patches are solid.

As much as I like the Angels current uniforms (the red-on-red home alternates, especially), the Angels just might have the best throwback jerseys in the league. The 1970s uniforms that featured the state of California on one sleeve and an absolutely beautiful hat with a simple yellow halo cocked to one side of a simple lower-case a.

If there’s one thing that could make the Angels uniforms even better, it would be a more permanent return to the use of dark blue in the color scheme. Leaning heavily on red doesn’t make a ton of sense for a team named the Angels, given its association with the devil.
