3 teams who could now realistically trade for Melvin Gordon
2. Green Bay Packers
Unlike his predecessor Ted Thompson, who was inactive to a point of frustration for a lot of fans, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has been aggressive during his two offseasons in the job. Defense was the clear priority in free agency this offseason, with the signings of Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith up front and safety Adrian Amos. But no notable offensive weapons were added, as they look set to deploy Aaron Jones as the lead back in the offense new head coach Matt LaFleur has brought in.
Gordon has a Wisconsin connection, as a Kenosha native and a University of Wisconsin alum. So as much as he’s got control over his landing spot in a potential trade, as the Chargers could simply not want the deal that’s offered from a preferred team, the Packers could be high on his list.
Green Bay’s window to win another Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers under center is closing, perhaps faster than anyone thinks. Giving up some future draft capital, starting with a 2020 first-round pick they hope will fall in the 20s, should be an easy decision if a deal for Gordon is on the table. Theoretically, the idea of sending Jones back to the Chargers in a trade for Gordon should not be a deal breaker.
