MLB DFS picks and pivots 9/6: First round Plut-KO
MLB DFS – Building our bats
As much as I beat the Jon Lester regression drum every five days, the crew here at FanSided Fantasy has been on the Adam Plutko is awful train for months and while he has been hit up for 4 ER’s now two of his last five starts, including against the same team he faces tonight in Minnesota, the regression seems like it is still not fully here.

Plutko has a SIERA of 5.31 which is 4th worst on the slate but yet is still nearly a full run higher than his ERA and his 50% fly-ball rate and .230+ ISO marks to both sides of the plate are just screaming trouble. Well, tonight against a Twins line-up where the first five batters have .200+ ISO marks against RHP this season, he could be in for a whole lot of pain.
The first five batters in the Twins lineup, Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco, Nelson Cruz, Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano, not only have huge ISO metrics but they are all extreme fly-ball hitters with 40% or higher marks against an extreme fly-ball arm. To me, I think this 5 man stack should be at the core of your builds and depending on the line-up, you can find different ways to fully stack, including a wrap-around with guys at the bottom of the line-up like Jake Cave or Jason Castro.
Cave specifically is very interesting as an extreme ground ball hitter as you can attack the extreme fly-ball tendencies of Plutko here and if he is batting in the #9 spot, it gives you a stack that differentiates you from those who simply go 1-6.
Even with 6 Twins, going with a Matz and Bundy build will leave you with well over $8K per batter for the last two spots in your roster which puts you in the perfect position to build around bats and you can take shots on expensive one-offs like Cody Bellinger against The Shark. Belly has a massive .346 ISO mark against RHP this season and against the slider/cutter which are Samardzija’s primary offerings off the fastball, he has .330+ ISO metrics.
Again, you are looking at a build here stacked around Minnesota and their 6+ IRT and you can still afford to tack on a player with slate breaking upside like Belly. It sounds like a night to let the bats do the talking!
