NFL DFS bargain bin- Week 1 Quarterbacks
Josh Allen, BUF at NYJ (DraftKings-$5,600/FanDuel-$6,900/ FantasyDraft-$11,900/ Yahoo-$24)
Big things are expected from Allen this season following his strong finish to his rookie campaign. The dual-threat signal-caller is highly capable of providing well-rounded fantasy production due to his elite ability on the ground, which was evidenced in 2018 by a pair of 100-yard rushing tallies and a 95-yard effort in the season finale against the Dolphins. He checks in at highly reasonable prices across all four sites to kick off the new season and will be involved in a game that should remain competitive throughout.
The Jets allowed the fourth-most rushing yards to quarterbacks last season, doing so at an elevated clip of 5.7 yards per attempt. They also surrendered three rushing touchdowns to the position. As it were, Allen was responsible for close to a third of those yards and a third of those scores, as New York was one of the teams he victimized for a 100-yard rushing effort (101) and also notched one touchdown on the ground against in that Week 14 contest.
Then, the Jets were far from elite against the pass, surrendering the ninth-most passing yards (4,343) and a 29:13 TD:INT. New York was also ranked in the bottom half of the league in points per drive allowed (2.19) and surrendered the fifth-most air yards (4,937), while Allen was tied with several other quarterbacks for sixth-highest average air yards per completion (6.5). That particularly sets up Allen for some potentially successful downfield connections with speedy offseason acquisition John Brown. Gregg Williams is the new defensive coordinator for Gang Green, and while that likely equates to plenty of pressure on Allen, his mobility and willingness to take risks could actually help parlay some of those risky blitzes into big plays.
Nick Foles, JAX vs. KC (DraftKings-$5,300/ FanDuel-$6,500/FantasyDraft-$11,400/Yahoo-$27)
Foles’ one other foray as a starting quarterback outside of Philadelphia didn’t go very well, as he generated a lackluster 7:10 TD:INT for the Rams back in 2015. An older, wiser and now Super Bowl-winning Foles gets a second crack at making his name as the top gun in Jacksonville, where he could be involved in a shootout right from the jump against Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs’ high-powered attack. Both game script and KC’s inconsistent secondary could help facilitate a strong fantasy showing from Foles in his Jaguars debut.
The Chiefs finished last season allowing the most passing yards (4,721) overall, along with 30 touchdown passes, which also ranked them in the bottom 10 of the NFL. Kansas City will roll with a pair of suspect corners in the opener in the form of undrafted Charvarius Ward and journeyman Bashaud Breeland, while Foles will apparently have the services of Marqise Lee (knee) at his disposal right out of the gate, giving a significant boost to his pass-catching arsenal.
That will come in especially handy versus a Chiefs team that should force the Jags to keep their foot on the gas all four quarters. Additionally, it’s worth noting KC allowed the most air yards (5,788) in the NFL last season while also ranking in the bottom half of the league in yards after catch allowed (2,079), two other metrics that point in the direction of a potentially fertile fantasy scenario for Foles in a game where he could put up north of 40 attempts.
