Bianca Andreescu just achieved the biggest win of them all, shocking out Serena Williams in a test of wills at the U.S. Open, 6-3, 7-5.

The year of 2019 has been the year of Bianca Andreescu, who rose like a phoenix on the WTA scene. She won two Masters tournaments and just proved that not one single one of her wins was a fluke. She backed up each one with a more resounding victory. The teenage sensation just locked in the win of a lifetime by beating a legend, Serena Williams.

In four grand slam finals since coming back from giving birth, Serena Williams has targeted Margaret Court’s overall slam record of 24. She will leave Flushing Meadows still seeking that monumental record. However, the fight she displayed to save championship point and surging to break the Canadian’s serve game in the second set, thrilled the crowd with the possibility.

But Bianca Andreescu was too good. In fact, she’s been too good all year. The 19-year-old’s resolve is captivating. Like Rafael Nadal, even when she’s down, she retains the ability to dig deep and pounce. Even when losing her nerve when she was sitting with championship point at 5-1 in the second, you can just sense that the resolute teenager was going to break through the temporary slump. Andreescu plays with power. Even more impressively, she plays with powerful belief.

But she’s only 19. “Is this real life?!” the exuberant teenager asked after her quarterfinal win earlier this week. She’s charmed the crowds with her honest and heartfelt responses after wins. Since the beginning of the tournament, she was my number one pick to take the title. Andreescu just had that unstoppable aura about her.

The Herculean rise of Andreescu has been a shot across the bow of the WTA field. She made the final at her first tournament this year, in Auckland. This after going through three qualifying rounds to get there. She didn’t win, but it was as if a bomb dropped on the WTA Tour. She won her next final, a Challenger event, but did one better the next time, winning her first Masters event at Indian Wells, and followed that up with her first win over Serena Williams in Canada.

Andreescu’s hard-hitting game takes a toll on her body and she often withdraws the next tournament after she’s won to give her body recovery time. A testament to her stubborn will, she always comes back in the next tournament a fighter.

The first Canadian to win a grand slam title, Bianca Andreescu is also the first player born in the 2000s to secure a major.

One wonders, can NextGen talent Daniil Medvedev do the same against Rafael Nadal? Both Andreescu and Medvedev have put in the performances of the year in tennis.

The men’s final takes place on Sunday, 4:00 p.m., ET, viewable on ESPN.
