Joe Burrow barged into the 2019 Heisman Trophy conversation as he led LSU over Texas in Week 2 but is he still behind Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa?

When previewing the 2019 college football season and, more specifically, potential Heisman Trophy candidates, LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow wasn’t a name often mentioned. Even after he came out and threw for five touchdowns in Week 1, he was still nothing more than a fringe dark horse for the award. But following his masterful Week 2 performance against Texas, Burrow has arrived and can no longer be ignored.

Burrow tore apart a Texas Longhorns secondary seemingly at will on Saturday night to give the No. 6 Tigers a massive victory on the road against the No. 9 ranked team in the country. The LSU signal-caller showcased his skills in a new-look offense out of Baton Rouge and looked the part of a star with legitimate Heisman potential.

The question after that type of performance from Burrow, though, is just how high it elevates him in the 2019 Heisman rankings. Did he do enough to surpass Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, the two guys who clearly led the race after the first week of the season? That’s what we’re here to explore.

Before we get into ranking the top 10 candidates after Week 2 and find out where Burrow slots in, though, there are some other players outside of the mix that needs to be mentioned.

Travis Etienne exploded in Week 1 with a 200-yard performance but the Clemson running back was all but shut down against Texas A&M on Saturday, causing him to drop out for now. Meanwhile, Georgia running back D’Andre Swift continues to look like he has Heisman potential but just isn’t getting enough work to truly let him shine at this point, keeping him out of the rankings still.

Outside of those two players, there are plenty of other candidates who have got opportunities and fully taking advantage of them through two weeks. With that in mind, these are the top 10 Heisman rankings for 2019 after the first couple of games in the regular season.
