One September call-up to watch for each MLB team
Los Angeles Angels: Jo Adell
In the midst of wasting what might be the best season of Mike Trout’s illustrious career, the Los Angeles Angels and their fans have another young stud to look forward to on the horizon. After failing to develop any solid talent to join Trout, the Angels finally have an elite prospect worth getting excited about in 20-year-old right fielder Jo Adell. The 2017 first-rounder has shot up the ranks rapidly and is knocking on the door of the big leagues.
Adell now claims the title of No. 1 outfield prospect in the league, and there is a lot to like about him. He has rocketed up from High-A all the way to Triple-A this year, hitting .289/.359/.475 overall with 27 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 76 games. Adell popped 20 home runs and drove in 77 in only 99 games last year and got a taste of Double-A at the end of his age-19 season.
There is almost nothing to knock Adell for as a hitter. His strikeout rate has been manageable and he draws enough walks. He hits for power to all fields and recognizes pitches well. There will be even more home-run power in the future as more of his doubles begin leaving the yard. Adell is also an elite runner with a strong arm. If he adds more muscle, a move to right field could make him an even more valuable defender.
The Angels have needed a young, dynamic star to join Trout for years and they finally have their man in Adell. Time is running out for the Halos to win anything meaningful in Trout’s prime years. In a very difficult division, they need to have Adell up to speed as soon as possible, which may mean getting his feet wet this month.
