NFL DFS: Matchups

Using last year’s data, here are the top team and individual matchups based on DVOA (defensive value over average) ratings for each team. We need more data from this season before we can have a large enough sample size to draw any conclusions about how teams have improved or got worse statistically speaking.

Top 5 team matchups

  1. Panthers vs. Bucs
  2. Eagles @ Atlanta
  3. Chiefs @ Raiders
  4. Vikings @ Packers
  5. 49ers @ Bengals

Top 3 matchups at each position

  • Quarterback: Mahomes, Rivers, Newton
  • Running back: Jacobs, McCaffrey, Sanders/Howard
  • Running back as receivers: Cook, Breida, White
  • Wide receiver: Allen, Chark, Moore
  • Tight end: Kelce, Dissly, Graham
  • Defense (lowest implied totals against): Baltimore, Houston, Denver

Remember, these are all based on last year’s aggregate statistics and every team in the league has changed some personnel, while other teams have changed coaches and schemes. We can’t assume that teams will continue to struggle against the same positions every season, but using 17 weeks of data instead of only one week is always going to be a more sound approach.
