DFS Advice: Defenses to Start

New England Patriots @ MIA

Miami looked like a hot mess on Sunday against the Ravens as they surrendered 59 points in their Week 1-loss. Baltimore wound up earning 14 total fantasy points as they compiled two picks, one fumble recovery, and three sacks while only allowing 10 points to a horrid Miami offense.

Subsequently, the Patriots were also able to shut down a highly explosive Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense holding them to just three total points for the entire night. With the Dolphins not having many threatening play-makers to speak of, and the Patriots playing like a top-10 defense to start the year, it spells for a recipe for success this Sunday in the Sunshine State.

Houston Texans vs. JAX

Let’s ignore for the moment that the Houston Texans D/ST came up with only -5 fantasy points on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints. That does raise some concerns, but Houston will be hosting Jacksonville this week.

The Jaguars just lost their starting quarterback in Nick Foles and they will have to rely on Gardner Minshew to pull them through. Minshew was alright, but he’s definitely not Drew Brees, nor does Jacksonville have the same quality players on offense like the Saints. Consider the Texans to be a strong D/ST play for this week.

Buffalo Bills @ NYG

The Buffalo Bills already possess a solid defense heading into 2019, but what makes them even more intriguing is the fact they are playing against the New York Giants. Besides the elite talent in Saquon Barkley, the Giants do not have any other weapons that pose much of a threat to the Bills’ defense.

Buffalo allowed just eight points to a more talented New York Jets offense roster in Week 1, showing signs that they will be able to do fine against the Giants. Buffalo should be started in all lineups this week given their opponent and talent on defense.

Carolina Panthers vs. TB

The Panthers are a good start this week as long as the right Jameis Winston shows up to play. If it’s the Jameis Winston we saw from last week, then the Panthers are a home run to start. If it’s 400 passing yards-3 touchdown passes-Jameis Winston, then it’s a fatal mistake.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the number of turnovers Winston has been prone to throughout the entirety of his career. The 49ers had two interceptions for all of last season, but they managed to get three in just one game against Winston. The Panthers are a middling defense with huge upside pending on how their opposing quarterback performs this Thursday night.
