Week 1 NFL MVP Power Rankings
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
If it weren’t for the Patriots absolutely smothering the Steelers on Sunday, you could make the case that Mahomes would be at 1. Even so, there’s plenty of time to climb the rankings.
Statistically Mahomes was even better than Tom Brady. Completing 75.8 percent of his passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns while finding Sammy Watkins for all of them. Averaging a whopping 11.5 yards per attempt, Mahomes made throwing against a tough Jacksonville secondary look like clockwork.
You could knock Mahomes for trying to get too cute when he sailed a pass above a wide-open Travis Kelce for a touchdown, trying to throw another no-look pass. That would be nit-picking, however when you have a receiver as open as Kelce was, you need to capitalize.
Moving forward, you can expect the 2018 NFL MVP to maintain his ground in these rankings as long as he can put up gaudy numbers and the Chiefs can remain atop the AFC West. Considering the weapons at his disposal even with the loss of Tyreek Hill for 4-6 weeks, Mahomes should still be able to stand his ground as he competes for his second MVP award.
Mahomes and the Chiefs next task will be to the Bay Area to take on an Oakland Raiders team trying to continue to prove to people that they are past the Antonio Brown saga.
