USC football: 5 coaches who could replace Clay Helton
1. Urban Meyer, FOX studio host
Meyer retired as coach at Ohio State after last season, and he has moved into broadcasting as part of FOX’s new star-studded pregame show with former USC players Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart. That move also puts him in a Los Angeles studio each Saturday, in obvious close proximity to USC.
Swann’s resignation has paved the way for, frankly, a more competent and credible athletic director to come in. That would make the football head coaching job automatically more appealing to big-name candidates, like Meyer.
Meyer has of course been here before. After leaving Florida for health reasons, he spent one season working at ESPN before returning to coaching at Ohio State. He remains involved with the school in an administrative role.
Twitter has naturally gone ablaze with Meyer-to-USC speculation in the wake of Swann’s departure. Bush quickly said he would recruit Meyer if the Trojans didn’t improve this season, before circling back to say he was joking.
Until Meyer completely shuts the door on simply taking a year off in another pseudo-retirement, as much as his words could be believed, USC will stand as his most speculated and most likely landing spot to be back on the sideline in 2020.
