10. Anthony Gordon, QB, Washington State

The Washington State Cougars faced their first viable opponent of the 2019 season as they went on the road to face Houston on Friday night, which meant the first true test for quarterback Anthony Gordon. Considering that Gordon had thrown for 884 yards and nine touchdowns in his first two games against Northern Colorado and New Mexico State, the quarterback had the opportunity to really cement his spot in these rankings.

Gordon delivered a big game for Wazzu in leading them to victory over Houston as he went 36-of-48 for 440 yards and three touchdowns, giving him over 1,300 passing yards already for the 2019 campaign. While you do worry about his production and the team’s effectiveness as the level of competition increases throughout the year, his start to the season has been fantastic.

9. Chase Young, DE, Ohio State

Yes, Ohio State hasn’t played anyone of note to this point in the season. Having said that, defensive end Chase Young has been a force that no offense can contain to this point. After registering three sacks in his first two games, the Ohio State star and potential first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft added another two quarterback traps on Saturday against Indiana. That gives him five for the year already.

Young is now on pace to shatter the Ohio State single-season sack record of 14 (Vernon Gholston in 2007) with five through three games. For a defensive player to be considered for the Heisman Trophy in a serious way, that player has to do something truly incredible. Young is currently on track to do that and, if it continues against Big Ten competition, he’ll be impossible to ignore no matter which side of the ball he plays on.
