UCL DFS Value Forwards/Midfielders

Erling Haaland (Genk @ Red Bull Salzburg, $17) – Haaland is perhaps my favorite GPP pick in this category.  Haaland is a wildly underrated goal scorer.  He scored 9, yes one less than 10, goals in a U-20 World Cup game against Honduras this past summer.  He also has 11 goals already this year in seven games, including a hat trick this last weekend.  Salzburg is scoring an average of 4.85 goals per game right now, and Genk won’t be able to provide much resistance.  Many people will fade this game because they don’t know the players.  Don’t let that be you.  Hwang Hee-Chan ($15) is the other guy you want here with Dominik Szoboszlai ($10) and Zlatko Junuzovic ($11) providing some value.

Marcel Sabitzer (Leipzig @ Benfica, $14) – Sabitzer does so well at getting peripherals, so he’s a perfect “safe” guy to pair with someone you roster for a goal.  Sabitzer is second on the team in shots per game behind Timo Werner ($18), who has five goals this year, and he leads the team in chances created and assists.  I like Leipzig some, but I’m not crazy about them which is why I prefer saving money with Sabitzer over Werner.  Sabitzer adds in more defensive peripherals like tackles and interceptions than Werner will as well.  There isn’t a whole lot to like in this price range, so Sabitzer could be popular.

Yusuf Yazici (Lille @ Ajax, $12) – There’s some talk that Lille will be able to put up a good fight against Ajax on Tuesday.  While I’m not sure about that, I don’t hate getting a little Lille exposure.  No one really plays a ton of strong defense in the Eredivisie and Ajax are giving up one goal per game on average right now.  Victor Osimhen ($18) is the guy you want if you’re hoping for a low-owned Lille goal as he has five already this season, but I’ll take the $6 savings with Yazici who is known more for his creative abilities and set pieces.  There likely won’t be a shortage of action in this game which should favor Yazici’s ability to get peripherals.

Ansu Fati (Barcelona @ Borussia Dortmund, $12) – I’m very interested to see how many people will roster Fati on this slate.  The 16-year-old is capitalizing on some Barcelona injures and has now scored in his last two games for them.  Dortmund is known more for their scoring than their defense, so this is a solid matchup for Fati to continue his run.  He doesn’t add in many peripherals and hasn’t played a full 90 minutes yet, so there is definite risk associated with this play.  However, you won’t find many better goal scorers for this price.

Thomas Delaney (Barcelona @ Borussia Dortmund, $8) – This is crazy cheap for Delaney.  He leads the team in interceptions (5/game) and tackles (2.5/game) and is third on the team in clearances (2.5).  His attacking upside is negligible, but he should be able to collect plenty of defensive peripherals in this matchup against Barcelona to provide some much-needed salary relief.
