NFL Recap: Week 2 fantasy football lessons learned

Hopefully, you were able to avoid some of the nastiness that was “Bloody Sunday” as some are dubbing it on Twitter. Big Ben was the guy to own in fantasy football, especially on DraftKings after Andy Dalton ripped up the Seahawks secondary. A lot of people thought a relatively cheap JuJu and a super cheap Big Ben were the stack to have.

I was watching some Twitch streams (shout out Manny Lora and Ryan Hodge who provide unbelievably good fantasy football information there) and the guys were really into running a game stack on this sneaky high total game. It was flying under the radar and unfortunately, it did not go quite as one would have thought. I don’t know if there’s necessarily anything to learn from this situation because you just cannot predict injuries. That is ESPECIALLY true when there was apparently a known issue with Ben’s elbow going into this week and this game and it wasn’t reported seemingly anywhere. I’m a huge Steelers fan and follow the beat writers etc. and honestly had no idea.

I didn’t play Big Ben in my main fantasy football lineup but I didn’t do much better focusing in on Carr. I would be shocked if Derek Carr is going to be on the Raiders by the end of this season. There was an assumption the Raiders would be massive chalk this week on both sites (and they were). My thought was if the Raiders are going to do well playing against the high paced porous defense of the Chiefs, and they’re expected to be highly owned and do well then the quarterback would be very involved in that. He was SO cheap and the logic was there. Naturally, he did not do really well. In the future, a quarterback on a team that is expected to do really well and have a solid total will continue to be in play for me in fantasy football. Just hope it isn’t going to be Carr or Jameis Winston anymore…

Another quarterback who actually did turn out to be a great play was on the opposite side of the Raiders. Patrick Mahomes is always the most expensive quarterback on the fantasy football slate in regards to DFS (as he should be). My strategy with the quarterback is to almost never pay up and generally, that’s worked really well. That strategy has also held true for defense which is another story. Needless to say, that did not work well this week. Mahomes actually was looking as though he really missed Tyreek Hill this week…and then the second quarter happened where he threw for four touchdowns. Unbelievable. All four touchdowns were bombs too. Seriously go watch the highlights. The lesson here is maybe (definitely) Mahomes is worth the price tag every week. Hopefully, I can adjust my blinders and suck it up and just pay for him at some point.
