Fantasy Football Impact: Packers’ Defense Not Looking Like Swiss Cheese Anymore?
For years the Green Bay Packers’ defense was made fun of for their poor play against opposing offenses. Jokes about the defense having holes like Swiss cheese constantly came up in discussions every season.
Now it seems they have finally filled those holes and are ready to prove the critics wrong. The Packers haven’t had a solid defensive unit since the days of their Super Bowl run in 2010 which is nearly a decade ago. Before this year, they have been in the basement of the league in terms of total defense.
At this very moment, they rank second in least the number of points allowed (11.7/gm), and 13th in total yards surrendered (328.3/gm). While this is still a very small sample size to base off how they will be for the remainder of 2019, it’s a pretty good indicator of what they can possibly end up like.
Some people will say Green Bay has yet to take on an offense with dangerous weapons like Chicago and Denver, but it’s still a great sign to see them take care of weaker opponents. Good defenses know how to handle the lesser challengers.
They don’t overlook them as secondary and make sure they do their job the same way they would as if they are going up against the best offense in the league.
In their first three games of the year, Green Bay’s D/ST has produced 13, 9, and 13 fantasy points for owners in each of those respective games.
The Packers will now be playing against a banged-up Philadelphia Eagles offense on short rest this Thursday night. While it is unknown if Philly’s top two receivers, Alshon Jeffrey and DeSean Jackson will be available for this game, the Packers will still have to face Carson Wentz.
Even without Jeffrey and Jackson active in Week 3 against the Lions, Wentz was able to throw for 259 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Eagles are a desperate team as they are currently 1-2. They will be doing everything in their power to avoid a 1-3 start to their season as they travel to Lambeau Field Thursday night. The Packers better be ready and prepare as usual even if two of Philadelphia’s top options are unable to suit up for this contest.
This is what some call as a potential trap game and it’s a good test to see how alert Green Bay’s defenders will be come game time on Thursday. The Packers are quickly becoming a favorite streaming option in fantasy and they could even become a permanent defense managers will want to possess on their teams if they can keep up the nice work.
