NFL quarterback rankings, Week 4: Baker Mayfield must be better
Brad Johnson Division
22. Gardner Minshew (LW: 28)
I wrote about Minshew and his ascension at length in Stacking The Box, so I’ll be brief. If the Jaguars continue getting this type of play from under center (73.9 percent, five touchdowns, one interception) they’ll remain in the AFC South hunt.
21. Derek Carr (LW: 17)
Carr continues to throw the ball short, take few if any chances… and lose games. Look, it’s foolish to blame Carr for Oakland’s record, but he’s not helping the cause. Completion percentage is worthless if a high mark is only because throws are traveling a few yards.
20. Kyler Murray (LW: 16)
Murray had his first ugly performance, coming on Sunday against the Panthers. The No. 1 overall pick threw for a grizzly 4.0 yards per attempt. Murray has more attempts than anybody else (137) and yet ranks 10th in yardage. The flashes are there, though, and Murray will get better as his team does.
19. Jameis Winston (LW: 24)
Winston’s Buccaneers lost to the Giants at home, and he moves up five spots. What? Well, Winston had another 300+ yard day and drove Tampa Bay to 31 points, only turning the ball over once. In the final moments, he put the Bucs in position to win before Matt Gay shanked a 36-yard field goal as time expired. Winston has been solid these past two weeks.
18. Andy Dalton (LW: 18)
Dalton doesn’t move this week. He was awful in the first half against Buffalo, but played better late and almost pulled off the comeback. The Bengals are 0-3, though, and it’s fair to think this should be his last season in the Queen City.
