2020 NFL mock draft: Saints take Joe Burrow
By Brad Weiss
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers thought they had an easy one at their feet this past week, especially fresh off a big divisional win against Carolina. However, the New York Giants and their rookie quarterback, Daniel Jones, got the best of the Bucs, as a short field goal sailed on them in the closing seconds of their 32-31 loss at home.
When it comes to this team, they need more help on the edges, especially with having some aging bodies out there right now. One player that could be targeted early in round one next year is Yetur Gross-Matos from Penn State, who would slide in and instantly be a starter along this Tampa Bay defensive line. If the Bucs get Shaq Barrett to re-sign, that would be a dangerous duo.
Gross-Matos is a classic NFL edge rusher, and the Buccaneers need to be better in this department if they want to compete in an NFC South loaded with quarterback talent. Sure, they could end up drafting a quarterback of their own here, as Jameis Winston does not look like the answer, but only time will tell how the Winston-Bruce Arians marraige develops.
The Carolina Panthers went into their Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals without quarterback Cam Newton, who was banged up in the team’s Week 2 loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his place, Kyle Allen got the start at quarterback, and he was magnificent, throwing for four touchdowns against a beatable Cardinals secondary.
While Allen looked great in his first NFL start, and he will get another one this week with Newton out, this is a team that could target the position in round one next April. The 2020 NFL Draft class has a ton of talent at the position, and Jake Fromm from Georgia certainly looks like a legitimate franchise guy at the next level.
Fromm was one of the better prospects coming out of high school, and he has developed into one of the better quarterbacks in college football. He can make every throw, and if it is time for the Panthers to move on from Newton, Fromm would be a guy who can come in and start as a rookie, much like he did as a freshman for the Bulldogs.
