Philadelphia Phillies: Ashburn Alley

The Philadelphia Phillies’ new home, Citizens Bank Park, could not be more diametrically opposed from their old two-sport cookie cutter, Veterans Field. Citizens Bank Park draws on all of the retro-vintage design features, offers sweeping views of downtown Philadelphia and is a very comfortable, family-friendly place to watch a game. Perhaps the Phillies lost a bit of an edge by leaving the Vet, but the new stadium offers a massively upgraded fan experience.

The Phillies went all out to make sure that Citizens Bank Park would be a stadium people would feel excited about visiting, and they certainly hit the mark. When the team is playing well, there is a very festive atmosphere in the park, proving that a team with a reputation for having tough fans can still keep that home-field advantage while also catering to the fans just a little bit.

All three of Philadelphia’s major sports venues sit on the same wide expanse of parking lots in South Philly. There isn’t much surrounding the complex except industrial buildings and train tracks. To give fans something more to do inside, the Phillies built a huge open-air concourse behind the outfield named after former star Richie Ashburn. Ashburn Alley is packed with unique Philly specific food offerings like Chickie’s & Pete’s crab fries, Tony Luke’s for cheesesteaks and Bull’s BBQ, where former Phillie Greg Luzinski can often be spotted working his own stand.

Ashburn Alley has a carnival-like feel and offers something for all fans. Another spot worth checking out is the Mitchell and Ness store, where the Philadelphia-based throwback maker has an entire store full of retro gear. There is also a massive baseball playground for kids that features a giant whiffle ball field, complete with dugouts, padded walls and an electronic scoreboard.
