Texas Rangers: TBD

The Texas Rangers will be getting a new ballpark next season when Globe Life Park is replaced with Globe Life Park. It wasn’t that the Rangers old stadium was outdated or in desperate need of repair due to structural or capacity issues — it had just become infeasible to continue asking fans to brave 100-degree temperatures in an outdoor stadium with no air conditioning. The new stadium will feature a retractable roof that will likely remain shut for the entire summer.

The new stadium will be an impressive structure that does seem to look an awful lot like the Houston Astros home park. The Rangers are leaning heavily on Texas colors and materials in their new home. They are using the same brick as their current stadium and have large soaring columns and arches supporting the light towers in the outfield. The renderings do look impressive.

Until the Rangers actually begin playing games at their new stadium, it will be difficult to gauge what new and exciting fan experiences the team will offer. No doubt, there will be plenty of outlandish food items and Texas spirit around the park. Similar to the Seattle Mariners stadium, the roof will just slide off to open rather than folding up on itself.

I’m torn on the Rangers replacing a perfectly fine stadium that is barely 25 years old with a new dome funded with taxpayer dollars. I’ve always been partial to the old Globe Life with its roof in right field that is a throwback to old Tiger Stadium, the building in center field with the white truss facade and the large lawn where fans can run out to chase home runs. On the other hand, the fan experience will be infinitely better in the Texas summer with air conditioning.
