Upset Alert: 5 college football teams in danger of losing in Week 5
4. California Golden Bears
Ranking: 15 | Opponent: Arizona State Sun Devils | Time: Friday, Sept. 27, 10:30 p.m. ET
One of the biggest surprises in the first four weeks of the 2019 college football season has been the California Golden Bears. Shockingly enough, this team is the only squad in the Pac-12 that has yet to suffer a loss on the year. Furthermore, they’ve done that with some impressive wins already, most notably grinding out a win over Washington and then going on the road to beat Ole Miss last week.
Cal’s defense is truly one of the best units in college football. The Golden Bears are highly experienced and have NFL caliber talent on every level of that group, particularly in the secondary. More importantly, quarterback Chase Garbers has improved dramatically from his first year as the starter last year, taking this team to a new level.
What remains to be seen about Cal and Garbers in particular, though, is how consistent they can be. After all, a road SEC win is impressive but going to the wire against a bad Ole Miss team isn’t all that inspiring when considering the Golden Bears. Thus, taking on an explosive Arizona State Sun Devils team with a stout defense could be difficult.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels might be young and inexperienced but the talent is there and he has the likes of Eno Benjamin helping to shoulder the load. If their defense can cause Garbers to revert to his 2018 form a bit and the offense can find marginal success, the Sun Devils could well be in line to pull off an upset on the road.
