Daily Fantasy Football: Running Back Pivots

Chalk: Christian McCaffrey, Austin Ekeler, Marlon Mack

Pivots: Derrick Henry, David Johnson, Leonard Fournette

It will be Ekeler’s last hurrah as a chalky DFS play since Melvin Gordon is going to be back next week. Mack and McCaffrey are both good plays based on their volume alone, something we target with cash game plays often. But I have three other “bell-cow” backs I am going to target in GPPs this week.

Derrick Henry is the only running back to score a rushing touchdown in each of his first three games. He’s averaging 18 touches per game and has out-carried Dion Lewis 51-9 so far this season as it’s clear that Tennessee is finally comfortable featuring him as the workhorse.  Henry’s “juke rate” of 45.5% is good for fourth-best in the NFL which means he’s hard to tackle. Just ask the Browns defenders who he gashed for 159 total yards and two touchdowns in week one. I think he has that type of upside here this week against Atlanta, a defense that I always want to consider targeting with running backs.

David Johnson makes his return to this column again this week. I can’t help but want to continue to target DJ as he’s such an attractive option on Draftkings due to his dual-threat nature. His 17 targets through the first three weeks are the 8th most among backs. Seattle’s defense isn’t a unit to be feared and DJ is a mismatch for their linebackers in the passing game.

The pace that Arizona is running their offense means potentially more offensive plays that we get DJ on the field for and while there is a lot of interest in the Seattle side of this game, I’m not hearing much about the Cardinals main guys despite the large market share that both Larry Fitzgerald and Johnson have in this offense.
