EPL DFS: Top-Tier Defenders

Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton @ Tottenham, $16) – Vestergaard is often featured in my EPL DFS Breakdowns, but usually not as one of my top defenders.  However, I love this match-up for him on Saturday.  Tottenham allow opposing center defenders to collect a ton of clearances, and that is exactly where Vestergaard feasts.

He had a dud of a last game against Bournemouth, and I’m hoping that deters people from playing him because this is a prime spot for him to bounce back.  Before the game last week, he had 3 straight 24+ point games, and this is a spot where he can return to that mark.

Fellow defender, Jan Bednarek ($15), actually leads Southampton in clearances.  Like Vestergaard, he had a rough last outing but before that he had 5 straight games with at least 6 clearances.  They’re both priced up for this match-up, but that won’t stop me from playing one or both.  Cedric Soares ($13) is a little cheaper and a viable play but also a little more risky that Vestergaard or Bednarek.

Serge Aurier (Southampton @ Tottenham, $14) – This veteran wing-back has started the last 2 games for Tottenham.  In a good match-up with Crystal Palace he got an assist while scoring 28.4 fantasy points.

Last week the match-up was more difficult, but he still finished with a respectable 11.2 points.  This match-up at home is much more like the game against Palace.  While his attacking upside is not as great as it was earlier in his career, he’s one of the better attacking defender options on this slate.

He has created 2 chances in both of his starts, and with Tottenham significantly favored at home, I can see Aurier playing well again as he tries to make a play for more time on the field.  With Southampton’s goal scoring struggles, a clean sheet bonus is likely as well.

Diego Rico (West Ham @ Bournemouth, $13) – FanDuel still won’t raise Rico’s price after he has 17+ points in all 3 of his starts so far this season.  Rico has 2 assists in his last 2 games, but he can still put up points in the mid-upper teens without that like he did in week 1.

Rico can spread around his defensive peripherals, and I’ve mentioned how I like players who can collect those peripherals on both sides of this match-up.  Rico will not be chalky on a full slate and is a nice defender to get on Saturday.
