Fantasy Football Advice: First Look at NFL Week 5

Welcome back, Fansiders, to my first look at week 5 of the NFL schedule. Every Tuesday, I compile as many stats and helpful bits of info that I can and offer some fantasy football advice that hopefully helps you get your researched started.

Week 4 saw the Patriots and Chiefs pull out some tough wins to remain undefeated, while the Packers, Bills, Cowboys, and Rams were all handed their first losses. The 49ers had a bye and so they still stand undefeated at 3-0.  The Bengals, Cardinals, Redskins, Dolphins, Jets, and Broncos are all still searching for the first win in week 5. The Bengals host the Cardinals this week so we should get at least one more team into the win column.

"This article is going to be a Fantasy football advice “first look” at the coming week every Tuesday in which I attempt to give you a starting point for your research by providing some relevant statistics, pricing discrepancies across sites, and my own thoughts and insight on some of the players with the primary focus being on DFS."

I had a really poor week in DFS as I faded some of the good chalk (Gallman and Dissly) while going way too heavy on some bad chalk (Keenan Allen and Marlon Mack). Like a quarterback who throws a bad interception, we DFS players have to have a short memory and be ready to get right back after it the next week and I personally couldn’t be more ready to turn the page from week 4 to week 5.

We now have four weeks of data to draw from and we are finally starting to see how things are going to shake out with how teams will divide up touches amongst running backs, targets to wide receivers, etc… Week 5 should be the first week that we can actually feel good projecting the amount of involvement for offensive players and we have seen enough of teams’ defenses to feel better about finding the best matchups.

My goal here is to give you some information to chew on for the next few days until the vast majority of NFL DFS content drops later in the week. I would highly encourage anyone who wants to improve their lineups and roster construction to do as much independent research as you can before you start reading articles filled with player picks to see if your research lines up with the experts. And just a reminder, don’t forget to read my GPP pivots column every Friday!
