3. Los Angeles Angels

The Angels have let another season of Mike Trout‘s prime go by without a trip to the postseason, and a 72-90 record this year got manager Brad Ausmus fired after just one season. General manager Billy Eppler is surely on notice, if he wasn’t already, so along with targeting Joe Maddon to become the new manager, a big offseason move or two has to be on the radar.

The Angels are already in the top-10 in projected 2020 payroll right now, at $160.27 million total when accounting for everything. But they also seem to have some room to add, with a reasonable-looking $114.3 million currently committed to the 25-man roster right now.

Owner Arte Moreno, for better or mostly worse, has been willing to pony up for big contracts to players in an effort to win. A Wild Card berth looks like the ceiling for the Angels, with the Houston Astros not going anywhere atop the AL West. A push toward even that level of contention in 2020 would be pretty serious progress though, and an effort to add a star in his prime like Rendon (and/or Mookie Betts) has to already be under consideration in Anaheim.
