AEW Dynamite recap for October 2, 2019: Dawn of a revolution
By Paul Bradley
Tag Teams Aplenty
Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes were interviewed at ringside to plug Dynamite and their upcoming film but they apparently draw the ire of Los Gueros del Cielo who come out the ring and threaten the actors. Private Party then came out of the crowd and offered beers to the actors while jawing with their old opponents from All Out.
SCU are then shown in a promo in D.C. where Scorpio Sky attempts a Barack Obama impression while Kazarian and Daniels play his security detail. We cut back to the arena where SCU are interviewed on the stage and Sky tells the crowd that Kazarian and Daniels will be representing SCU in the upcoming tag team tournament.
This brings out The Lucha Bros who proclaim that they have “Cero Miedo!” Pentagon then spits water in Daniel’s face which ignites a full brawl on the stage. The teams get separated quickly as we got to commercial.
This segment of the show was meant to introduce some of the backlog of tag teams not in matches tonight and for some it worked and for others it didn’t. The Kevin Smith angle felt very hokey and Monday Night Raw-inspired and the inclusion of Los Gueros del Cielo in the segment didn’t help the team at all. Private Party came out looking fine but the stench of this segment was felt hard by the AEW fans.
Another hokey and cringe-inducing segment was SCU and their “presidential” promo. It came off very half done and also hokey instead of funny. The segment on the stage helped restore some credibility back to the So Cal natives but was more effective in making the Lucha Bros feel like the most credible team in the division. Hopefully AEW strays away from too many comedic segments like this on their future shows.
