Heisman rankings Week 6: Jonathan Taylor running over everyone
10. Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State
After climbing to No. 21 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, the Oklahoma State Cowboys went on the road to Lubbock and suffered their second loss of the season. However, the loss was no fault of star running back Chuba Hubbard, who continued to be dominant. And that was despite the Cowboys falling behind early behind three first-half turnovers from quarterback Spencer Sanders.
In the losing effort, Hubbard was big-time with 34 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Defenses know that Hubbard is going to be used heavily and can key in on that but the running back is still able to succeed in the manner he was on Saturday. Though the Cowboys are likely not going to be good enough overall for Hubbard to be a viable candidate, the back has earned a spot in these rankings.
9. Jamie Newman, QB, Wake Forest
It feels safe to say that few people expected the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to be the No. 22 ranked team in college football after five weeks but that’s where Jamie Newman and the unbeaten Demon Deacs climbed to entering an idle Week 6. And while Wake Forest has gotten big contributions from others like wide receiver Sage Surratt, it’s been Newman at quarterback that’s the straw stirring the drink in Winston Salem.
Through five games, Newman has thrown for 1,521 yards, 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions while also adding an impressive 262 yards rushing with three additional scores. More importantly, he’s been consistent at the helm of an undefeated team. How long that lasts could certainly be called into question. But for now, he’s earned a spot firmly in the top 10 of these rankings.
